چکیده

The metamagnetic-like transitions and giant magnetocaloric effect were observed with the magnetic field applied parallel to the aand c axes, but not the b axis in a Tb5Si2.2Ge1.8 single crystal. The in situ x-ray powder diffraction study indicates that these metamagnetic-like transitions are coupled to crystallographic phase transformations occurring via strong magnetoelastic interactions. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy plays an important role in this system. Magnetic fields less than 40 kOe cannot drive either the magnetic or the crystallographic phase transition to completion for Tb5Si2.2Ge1.8 powder due to the strong single ion anisotropy of Tb.

Itinerant electron metamagnetism and magnetocaloric effect in Dy(Co,Si)2

Itinerant electron metamagnetism in DyðCo1-xSixÞ2 compounds was studied in the light of a recent theoretical model based on magnetovolume effect and spin fluctuations. The nature of the magnetic transition in these compounds was analyzed within the framework of this model. The magnetocaloric effect in these compounds has been calculated and correlated with the strength of itinerant electron met...

Anisotropic Magnetocaloric Effect and Magnetic Order in Antiferromagnetic Gd2InGe2

We investigated the transport, thermal and magnetic properties of antiferromagnetic (TN = 45 K) Gd2InGe2. Magnetization measurements under applied magnetic field, oriented along different crystallographic directions, were used to extract the anisotropic magnetocaloric effect. We also measured magnetization under pulsed field up to 45 T. From the analysis of the electrical transport and magnetiz...

Sequential Cobalt Magnetization Collapse in ErCo2: Beyond the Limits of Itinerant Electron Metamagnetism

The itinerant electron metamagnetism (IEM) is an essential physical concept, describing magnetic properties of rare earth - transition metal (R-TM) intermetallics, demonstrating technologically important giant magnetoresistance and magnetocaloric effects. It considers an appearance of TM magnetization induced by spontaneous magnetization of surrounding R atoms, which provides significant respon...

Magnetoelastic Effects in UNiAl and UCoAl

We report on strongly anisotropic thermal-expansion and magnetostriction of UNiAl and UCoAl within the frame of the 5f -electron magnetism. Both the compounds crystallize in the hexagonal ZrNiAl-type structure and exhibit huge magnetocrystalline anisotropy with the c-axis as the easy magnetization direction. UNiAl orders antiferromagnetically (TN ≈ 19 K) and exhibits a field-induced metamagneti...

Variation of magnetostriction with temperature in Tb5Si2.2Ge1.8 single crystal

The Tb5(SixGe4−x) alloy system is similar to the better known Gd5(SixGe4−x), except it has a more complex magnetic and structural phase diagram. Gd5(SixGe1−x)4 has received much attention recently due to its giant magnetocaloric effect, colossal magnetostriction and giant magnetoresistance in the vicinity of a first order combined magnetic-structural phase transition. The magnetostriction chang...
